Alternative Health: Mosquito Control
For as long as humans have been plagued with the pesky mosquito, we have also sought ways to control these lowly insects. There are a variety of mosquito control techniques, some better than others, and some of which are more or less harmful to the environment. Lets take a look at some the ways in which we try to control mosquito outbreaks.
Probably the absolute best way you can get rid of mosquitoes is to get rid of their breeding grounds. This is an attack at the source solution that when properly implemented is second to none. This means getting rid of all standing water that is within 300 or so feet from your home. If you have a pond, dont worry, just put some goldfish in it. Goldfish and some other types of freshwater fish will happily eat any mosquito larvae that they find.
If it proves impossible to remove standing water from the area surrounding your home, then you might have to move on to other methods of control. Pesticides are a popular if not altogether ecologically sound method of mosquito control. There are also mosquito traps you can buy that eschew harmful chemicals in favor of emitting warmth, carbon dioxide, and moisture in order to lure mosquitoes into their death chambers.
Mosquito Control Is a Constant Battle
Whichever method you use for attempting to control mosquitoes, you have to be aware that proper mosquito control requires constant vigilance. This isnt a case of a one time eradication. The good news is that if you do remain constant in your battle against these blood suckers, youre likely to see a dramatic decrease in their population, and that leads to far fewer pesky itchy bites, and consequently much more pleasant summer nights.
