Alternative Health: Migraine Triggers

Throughout the history of mans fight against migraine headaches, scientists have debated hotly about what the factor or factors are that trigger these painful headaches. Migraine sufferers generally have some hunches about what is causing their headaches, some contribute them to stress, sun exposure, or allergies, but in the end no one seems to be able to conclusively state what the triggers are. This makes it especially difficult to help prevent migraines.

The chemical tyramine seems to be an answer to at least some migraine sufferers problems. Tyramine is a chemical component that is found in a number of normal, readily available foods including yogurt, liver, yeast, aged cheese, wine and beer. For those migraine sufferers who are sensitive to tyramine, avoiding foods that contain this chemical will generally greatly reduce their symptoms.

Food allergies can also be a migraine trigger. There are a number of food allergies that have been shown to trigger migraine attacks including allergies to wheat, peas, mushrooms, tea and coffee, beef, oranges, corn syrup and even eggs. As with tyramine, avoidance is key. Staying away from foods that youre allergic to can greatly reduce your migraine headaches.

Check with Your Doctor
If you have severe or frequent migraines you should definitely talk to your doctor or physician. They can check you for food allergies and any type of blood sugar anomalies that could be contributing to your migraines. They can also recommend potential preventative medicines and supplements like magnesium, feverfew and riboflavin. Preventative medicines can be a powerful means for stopping migraines before they can start, regardless of the triggers.
